AL PITCHER - "Picture Show" - 9.30pm

(Festival Director Warren Speed's personal "Pick of the Fest")

Every day we see things we’ve never seen before, things that strike us as odd
or beautiful, and things that we’ve seen so many times we don’t even notice
them any more…

Not Al Pitcher.  His mind is constantly twisting, flipping and distorting what he
sees, igniting the mundane and for The Al Pitcher Picture Show, weaving the
events of his day in your town into a unique and hilarious one-off show.

With digital camera in hand and a newly made friend at the copy shop, Al wants
to show you what he sees in your home town. Every comic will tell you that ‘a
funny thing happened on the way to the gig’. Well, Al has the pictures to prove it.
Come see the show and you’ll never look at the bus station in the same way
again!

With a genuinely improvised show that’s guaranteed to be different every
night, Al Pitcher stands out as a daredevil in a world of scripts, rehearsals and

‘same old, same old’!

This is freewheeling, spontaneous and unmistakably original live comedy at it’s
best from one of the world’s most innovative comedians. Fresh from sellout
shows in Australia and New Zealand, don’t miss this chance to catch Kiwi star
Al Pitcher on his strictly limited tour of the UK!

"Pitcher sits firmly in the improvising, rambling, freewheeling comedy camp
inhabited by the likes of Ross Noble and Eddie Izzard. However, unlike both of
them, Pitcher is one of the best-kept secrets on the comedy scene. He is a
diamond as yet not hewn from the circuit rock. But it's only a matter of
time" – Time Out, March 2008

SARAH MILLICAN - If.Comedy Award Best Newcomer 2008

ANDREW LAWRENCE - If.Comedy Main Award Nominee 2007

and compere Warren Speed

Show at The Sage Gateshead

Sarah Millican

“Her laughter rate is exceptional”   The Scotsman

• Winner: If. Comedy Best Newcomer 2008
• Winner: Best Breakthrough act, North-West Comedy Awards 2006
• Nominee: Chortle Awards, Best Newcomer 2006
• Winner: Amused Moose Comedy Awards 2005
• Runner Up: BBC New Comedy Awards 2005
• Runner Up: So You Think You’re Funny 2005
• Runner Up: Funny Women 2005

Sarah has just returned from an incredibly successful Fringe Festival run for which she was awarded Best Newcomer at the prestigious If.Comedy Awards for her debut solo show, Sarah Millican's Not Nice.

She received rave reviews and enjoyed sell-out audiences for the entire run with critics pinpointing her as a hot new talent to keep an eye on.

Having gigged at just about every venue across the country, Sarah has established herself as a crowd-pleasing act with well- written material and a gentle delivery style that disguises her cutting observations on life. Her comedy writing has been recognised by the BBC, Live Theatre Newcastle and The Customs House in South Shields where her first play was staged in September 2005.

Press Quotes ...

"Millican's material has the entire audience - men and women, young and old - rolling in the aisles.  Her delivery is fantastic, and her jokes are well structured and perfectly paced. In short, she is a real talent."

Fest ****

"It requires exceptional skill to be a cruel yet likeable comedian and Sarah Millican nails the contradiction beautifully with a wonderfully assured Fringe debut."

The Scotsman ****

"A mercilessly unsentimental wit…her set is as neatly constructed as her individual, triple-punchline

jokes."

The Daily Telegraph

"It's credit to Millican's talent that her man-baiting isn't man-alienating; the blokes in the audience howl as loudly as the women.  There isn't a spare second in this gag-packed, deliciously dark show.  One of the hottest prospects on the UK circuit."

Metro *****

"British comedy needs a new female star and might just have got one!"

The Herald ****

"She surely has one of the highest gags-per-minute counts on the Fringe, with punchlines arriving every few beats with unwavering punctuality….Laughs come thick and fast. Millican has a frank, self-effacing manner and an obtuse approach to writing that avoids clichés and refreshes the genre. An impressive, and consistently funny, festival debut."

Chortle ****

"Saran’s gift is in her gentle, unthreatening delivery and the way she engages with the audience.

This is a fully crafted first show and a real delight."

The Observer

"Sarah Millican is one of the most talented newcomers I have seen in many years. A perfectly

formed hour.  Touching, witty and wonderfully ribald."

Veronica Lee, Sunday Telegraph

Andrew Lawrence

‘One of the greatest as-yet undiscovered talents on the circuit"  Daily Mirror

‘Evil elegance’  Time Out

• Nominee: If.Comedy Main Award 2007
• Nominee: If.Comedy Best Newcomer 2006
• Nominee: Sony Radio Awards 2006
• Winner: BBC New Act of the Year Competition 2004
• Winner: York Comedy Festival New Act of the Year Competition 2004
• Winner: Amused Moose Starsearch 2004
• Finalist: So You Think You’re Funny? 2003

The buzz about comedy’s best-kept-secret is fast making Andrew Lawrence a cult classic. With two successive If. Comedy nominations under his belt, Andrew recently returned from performing another hugely successful sell- out run with his brand new show, "Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There!" at this year’s Fringe Festival.

Andrew recently reprised his role as Marco on the new series of Ideal on BBC 3 and was also heard as the voice of David Miliband on the CGI series, Headcases on ITV 1. His appearance as headliner on Paramount’s World Stands Up is due to be broadcast later in the year with numerous other projects in the pipeline.

Andrew has received rave recognition in all the key new act competitions and is now a regular favourite on the comedy circuit, gigging at all the major clubs across the country and building a base of discerning fans addicted to the bleakly dark comic world he creates.

Boaasting a fiery crown of red hair and a deep, demonic voice, Lawrence’s fiendish persona is in complete allegiance with his material; it will shock you both in terms of content, and in terms of how much you will laugh.

With his flawless timing and delivery he can induce tears of laughter from audience members almost against their will.

Press Quotes ...

“Quite possibly the strangest and most original new comedian on the block…His material is dark and more than a bit twisted, but irresistibly funny.”   The Irish Independent

"Comedy’s most bountiful little ball of hatred…A fabulous show."  The Times

"Exquisitely evil…The writing is tight and razor-sharp, pulling no punches. He attacks everyoneand everything with poetic machine-gun bullets of acid tipped comedy. A genuis gremlin gnawing away at society."    Time Out

"Homicidal musings have never seemed so appealing!"  The List

"Lawrence is so thorough in assuming his character, that he often comes across as a young man who really does kill the thing he loves then feasts on the gooeyness inside, singing a tune about it as some kind of terrible yet touchingly inevitable catharsis. His victims’ losses are truy comedy’s gain."  Scotsman

"Lawrence is certainly not for the faint heated but for those that brave it - it is quite, quite brilliant!  He expresses his festering negatively beautifully, a relentless onslaught of savage adectives and corrosively evil metaphors. The florid language, the ceaseless pace of great lines and the vigour with which he pursues his derision all combine for a barnstorming show "  Chortle

Warren Speed

Compere for the show is Warren Speed, the festival director and general local fool.  Besides doing stand-up Warren also performs male burlesque around the UK and Europe, and has been seen on BBC1 as well as regularly being featured in Bizarre magazine.  With his big smile and easy going charm, Warren will certainly get the audience in the mood for the fabulous main acts to follow.

JOHN COOPER - "The 30 Year Itch"

with support from Chris Ramsey

Show at The Dog & Parrot, Newcastle - 8.15pm start

After a successful Edinburgh debut playing to a full house every night, John takes his first solo out  around the UK.

"The fact that one man created a comedy from the basic premise of the irritating skin condition eczema will never cease to astound. Hilarious, just go and see John Cooper."
- Three Weeks

Telling a personal story about growing up, moving on, flaring up, flaking out and the joy of grown up geekdom, It's an inspiring show for anyone who ever lacked confidence.

“Original, genuinely unpredictable and very rewarding. Has the audience smiling immediately.”  - Chortle

Drawing together his multi-disciplined skills of straight stand up, character, animation and improvised comedy, he's keen to point out this isn't an excuse for a personal therapy session, but simply following the first rule of comedy: – write what you know.

“I wanted to write a show about a subject that hasn't been tackled before. Eczema isn't funny, full stop. The core of the show is really about staying positive, and is a light hearted approach to a very ignored, but very common condition. It's no whingey boo-hoo session.”

Never one to take the obvious or easy route despite his easy going nature, before setting pen to paper, advice from fellow comics was ''change the title!”...

“I knew the challenge I was facing when I first wrote the word 'Eczema' in the show description, it's a big turn off, despite being one of the most common skin conditions there is, it's almost taboo. And that was what drove me to write the show, try and shift common perceptions, even slightly, but above all make it funny without being negative.”

''I could be accused of bandwagon jumping on the trend of emotional comedy shows, but it's really not the case. There is some stuff in the show which runs quite deep, but I've hit a point where a show about all this subject is the right thing to do.”
